User and Password prompt when accessing a Subversion repository

Abstract: Each time when a Subversion repository is accessed, a dialog comes up asking for the user name and password

Description:

When attempting to check-in, update, or commit files into a Subversion repository, a dialog comes up asking for the username and password.

Resolution:

Create or give access to the following directories for the affected user in the user profile directory.

  1. Application Data\Subversion
  2. Application Data\Subversion\auth
  3. Application Data\Subversion\auth\svn.simple
  4. Application Data\Subversion\auth\svn.ssl.server
  5. Application Data\Subversion\auth\svn.svn.username
Operating System User Profile directory (default)
Windows 2000 C:\Documents and Settings\<username>
Windows XP C:\Documents and Settings\<username>
Windows Vista C:\Users\<username>


Create the following empty files

  1. Application Data\Subversion\config
  2. Application Data\Subversion\servers

Ensure that you have read/write access to these files and directories.

If user does not have Subversion config file listed in no. 1, then, create the "config" (no extension) file in the Subversion directory specified in no. 1, with the following lines

[auth]
[helpers]
[tunnels]
[miscellany]
[auto-props]

Once the above is created, you should not encounter the password prompt more than once.
